ORCA's Schools Programme

ORCA Inspiring & Educating People

Every year, ORCA invites schools from all around the UK to take part in our inspiring education programme!

Free Fin-tastic Fun in Schools packs are sent to schools and teachers to inspire them about whales, dolphins and porpoises! They are some of the most intelligent, beautiful and awe-inspiring animals on the planet, and ORCA believes that educating the future generation about them and the threats that they face is key to the protection of these species.

Each year, there is a different theme to the resources. In 2017, the theme was ‘Giants of the Ocean’, and in 2018 ‘Marine Litter’. The activities link in with the curriculum and provide students extra support in the topics of science, maths and English.

In 2019 the recources will explore 'Voices of the Deep' and will help children understand all about how whales and dolphins communicate with each other.

Our Fin-Tastic Fun in Schools resources covers two topics:

The ‘Giants of the Ocean’ resources include three lessons; Whales, dolphins and porpoises. These interactive and fun presentations and activities help students understand more about the largest animals on our planet, intelligent dolphins and tiny porpoises, plus games and activities to help with children’s knowledge of the topic.

The ‘Marine Litter’ resources comprise of three lessons; What is Marine Litter? How does marine litter harm wildlife? What can I do? Through the interactive presentations and activities in these lessons, students will learn about one of the biggest threats our ocean wildlife faces today – marine litter, especially plastic pollution. Students will gain knowledge of this topic and learning is reinforced by students thinking of their own ideas of how can minimise this threat for the future.

The ‘Voices of the Deep’ resources include three lessons; Whale and dolphin communication, voices of the deep and oceans of noise. By using these resources, students will learn how and why whales, dolphins and porpoises use communication and they will even get to listen to huge blue whales, melodic humpback whales and even hear killer whale’s echolocation clicks.  Students will also explore how noise pollution impacts these animals.

Want to take part?

Each year hundreds of schools and thousands of students take part. Our education programme celebrates the ocean, covering different topics each year to keep everything fresh!

Although we encourage schools to deliver the materials in October to coincide with Whale Education Month, teachers can use the materials all year to inspire students about wonderful whales and dolphins.

As part of our Fin-tastic Fun in Schools ORCA will be producing a new series for 2019 on Communication. This fun and interactive pack will help children understand all about how whales and dolphins communicate with each other.
