ORCA join Surfers Against Sewage for local Beach Clean

- Some of the rubbish collected by volunteers on Eastney Beach, Portmsouth

The ORCA Your Seas team joined Surfers Against Sewage for their annual Big Spring Beach Clean on Eastney Beach Portsmouth yesterday.  Rubbish collected included glass, bottle tops, cigarette lighters, newspaper, plastic bags, plastic cable ties, wet wipes, cotton buds, fishing line, hooks, net and rope, also known as ghost gear.

The campaign which is supported by World Animal Protection, cleared more than 150 beaches around the UK.  It aims to reduce the amount of litter on beaches and in the sea which can harm marine wildlife such as whales, dolphin, porpoises, seals and seabirds.  More than 130,000 marine mammals are injured or killed by ghost gear worldwide every year and many more suffer through consuming plastics and other pollutants that they mistake for food.
